Synthpop is short for 'synthesizer pop' and it also known as techno pop. It is a sub genre of new wave music and became popular in the late 1970's to the 1980's. The dominant instrument used in synth pop songs is the synthesizer, hence, where it get's it's name from. It is used in songs of progressive rock, electronic, art rock and disco. It became popular in Japan and the United Kingdom in the late 70's to early 80's as part of the new wave movement. The genre has received a lot of criticism because of it's lack of emotion in synth pop songs and artists have spoken out about this. It is a major element of pop and rock music and has influenced many other genres.
